stealing the show at the recent O'Brien harness racing awards in Mississauga on January 28 Canadian trainer Casie Coleman thinks she can do even better in 2013. 'We don't have the same numbers but we certainly have a bit more quality,' the 32-year-old told Harnesslink.

If that’s the case then Coleman is in for a huge year after bagging four awards at the annual prize-giving ceremony in Ontario.

This included a fifth career top trainer honour for Coleman. In addition, two horses she trained and another she's a part-owner emerged victorious in their respective categories.

Betterthancheddar won the older pacing horse honour while Michaels Power was tops in the three-year-old pacing colt division and was voted Canada's horse of the year.

Last year was Coleman’s best year. She trained 223 winners (UDR 0.377) and banked a personal best $6.87 million from her 783 starters.

Coleman currently has 34 in work, including 18 two-year-olds and 14 three-year-olds.

“I’m slightly ahead of schedule with the babies this year. I’ve just been tuning up the babies in 2:44 at the moment and in the day or so I’ll crank them up to 42.

“The weather has been great in Florida so that’s been a great help. Last year I took all my 2-year-olds to Ontario on May 1 and qualified them in mid June. There have been a lot of changes in Ontario and because of that I’ll be heading to New Jersey with most of them,” Coleman told Harnesslink.

When asked to single out a couple of her best juveniles, she replied:

“I like Earth Shaker at this early stage. He’s a Rocknroll Hanovercolt, who is a full brother to Pretty Katherine. She won more than half a million dollars last year and went 1:50.3.

“Then there’s a Bettor’s Delight colt out of an Enchanted Beauty mare named Fairytale Prince.

“But I think my best might have been Twin B Tenacious, another Bettor’s Delight colt. He had a chip on his knee and will need a lot more time,” Coleman said.

On the 3-year-old front, she believed Vegas Vacation could be a major player in that age group this season.

“He won one race last year and I think he will develop into a very nice gelding. He also placed in some nice races and is telling me he’s ready for a big year.

“My Somebeachsomewhere filly L Dees Lioness should also perform well in that age group. She has already recorded a 1:50.2 mile.”

In the open ranks Coleman was especially looking forward to the return of her Little Brown Jug winner, Michaels Power and former American national champ and Des Smith Classic winner, Betterthancheddar.

“I’m excited about both of them returning to the track again. Potentially they would be my best two at this stage followed by Vegas Vacation, but there’s still a lot to happen yet.

“If they all stay fit and healthy we should be in for another good year,” Coleman said.
