alifying slate at the Meadowlands Saturday morning featured many of harness racing’s best and brightest. Over the course of 17 races, some of the sport’s biggest names competed at the Big M, led by the debut of 2012 Pacer of the Year Captaintreacherous. Drawing in with six other pacers in the morning’s 14th event, the Somebeachsomewhere-Worldly Treasure colt led gate-to-wire in a 1:52 performance for trainer Tony Alagna.

In rein to Tim Tetrick, the sophomore moved to the top from the outside post and clicked off a 28.1 opening quarter before reaching the half in 57 flat. After a 28.3 third panel, Captaintreacherous completed the mile with a 26.2 last quarter. He finished nearly two lengths in front of the Bruce Saunders-trained Teresa’s Beach, driven by John Campbell.

Odds On Equuleus, also making his three-year-old debut, narrowly won his qualifier in 1:52.4. Trained by Robin Schadt, the Art Major colt left from post six in the eight-horse qualifier, setting the pace for Campbell. After a 28.2 first quarter, Campbell rated the colt through two 29.1 panels before dashing home in 26 seconds to win by a neck over Yannick Gingras and Dedi’s Dragon.

Breeders Crown champion Rockin Amadeus and Gingras turned in their third successful qualifying effort Saturday with a 1:51.3 performance in the next to last race of the morning. The Rocknroll Hanover-Kikikatie colt took command from post four and never relinquished. The sophomore set fractions of 28.2, 57.1 (28.4) and 1:25.1 (28) before coming home in 26.2 for trainer Jimmy Takter. Rockin Amadeus hit the wire a neck in front of Andy Miller and Johny Rock.

Tetrick steered the Alagna trainee Mindset to victory in the other qualifier for sophomore colt pacers. Reaching the top before the half (58), the son of American Ideal kept a neck in front of Sir Michigan Z Tam in a time of 1:54.

Somwherovrarainbow, 2012 Two-Year-Old Filly Pacer of the Year, wired the field to capture her Meadowlands qualifier with a 1:52.4 clocking. Driven by Montrell Teague for his father, George, the Somebeachsomewhere-Rainbow Blue sophomore clicked off fractions of 28.1, 57, and 1:26. Turning for home up by more than three lengths, the filly paced a 26.4 last quarter to win by open lengths.

I Luv The Nitelife, runner-up to Somwherovrarainbow in the Breeders Crown, won her second qualifier in as many attempts at the Meadowlands, pacing to a 1:53.2 triumph. Driven by Tetrick for trainer Chris Ryder, the Rocknroll Hanover filly raced third through a 58.4 opening half. Tetrick moved the filly racing to three quarters (1:26.4) and grabbed the lead at the top of the stretch. I Luv The Nitelife sprinted home in 26.2 to win by a head.

 

Jk Black Beauty also won a qualifier for sophomore pacing fillies with a 1:52.2 performance. With only two starts to her credit at two, both victories, the Linda Toscano-trained filly raced near the front throughout for Brian Sears. The daughter of Bettor’s Delight sat through fractions of 28.4, 57.2 and 1:25 before coming home in 26.3 to win by three and one-half lengths.

Sweet Lou won his qualifying effort for the Burke Stable, turning in a 1:51.3 performance. Sitting second behind Mel Mara throughout the early going, Gingras and the four year old unleashed a 25.4 last quarter to win by two lengths.

 

The fastest mile of the morning was turned in by the Mark Harder-trained Golden Receiver, a 1:49.3 winner. Competing in the last event on the schedule, the eight year old started from the outside in the field of five and soon had the lead. With Tetrick at the controls, Golden Receiver wired the field to win by two and one-quarter lengths. Major Bombay finished second, timed in 1:50, followed by Hurrikane Kingcole, also timed in 1:50.

World champion Dontyouforgetit won his qualifier for sophomore trotting colts by nine lengths in a time of 1:57.1. Driven by Takter, the Cantab Hall-Solveig colt sat in the pocket while Modest Prince and Jeff Gregory set fractions of 28.1, 59.3 and 1:29.3. After clearing a break by the leader, Takter and Dontyouforgetit kicked home in :27.2 to secure the open lengths win.

Another Cantab Hall colt, Celebrity Stimulus, also won his qualifier for Susanne Strandqvist, trotting the mile in 1:57.2. Driven by Steve Smith, the three year old led the field to the quarter (29.3) before taking a seat behind Broadway Blaze and Mike Lachance through fractions of 59 and 1:28.2. Moving to the front at the top of the stretch, Celebrity Stimulus opened up by four at the wire.

Vaya Con Dios, another Toscano pupil, wired the field in his qualifier, winning by nearly four lengths in a time of 1:58.1. The son of Conway Hall was driven to victory by Gregory. 

Two sophomores that were impressive but did not win their respective qualifier were Corky and Explosive Action. Entered in an event for three year olds and up, the two trotters finished second and third to four-year-old filly D’orsay, a 1:55.1 winner. Corky, a son of Muscles Yankee trained by Takter and driven by David Miller, raced second through fractions of 29, 59.1 and 1:28 to finish a length back of the winner, timed in 1:55.2. Conway Hall colt Explosive Action, driven by Sears, was timed in 1:55.4.

A trio of three-year-old filly trotters won qualifiers to start the morning. Third at the quarter (29), Mistery Woman and Miller moved to the top in the first race on the program and claimed a narrow 1:56.4 victory. The Donato Hanover filly reached the half in 59 and three quarters in 1:28.4 before closing out the mile with a 28-second last quarter. Mistery Woman finished a neck in front of Southwind Cocoa and Tetrick, who closed with a 27.1 final panel.

After sending Mistery Woman out to a winning effort in the first race, trainer Jonas Czernyson repeated the feat in the second and third qualifiers. Thistle Dhu and Miller wired the field in the second event for trotting fillies, stopping the clock in 1:56.3. The Donato Hanover-Yankee Topaz filly set fractions of 28.3, 58.1, 1:28.2 and trotted home in 28.1. Corey Callahan steered Deja Vu Too to a gate-to-wire victory in the third event. The Deweycheatumnhowe-Danae lass won by more than four lengths, trotting the mile in 1:58.2.

Donato Hanover mare Real Babe edged Quick Deal and Kentucky Futurity winner My MVP in a tight 1:54.2 finish. Real Babe and Tetrick sat behind Quick Deal and Gingras through fractions of 28.4, 58.4 and 1:27.1. In the stretch, the mare closed with a 26.4 last quarter to surge ahead at the wire. My MVP, driven by Lachance, closed with a 26.3 final panel after racing third throughout.
