Powerful Mist, Mob Boss win $100,000 DSBF finals
Powerful Mist was overpowering, Mob Boss showed his grit in $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) Colt and Gelding Finals while Cams Art was named Horse of the Meet, Josh Green won his seventh straight Leading Trainer honors and Corey Callahan took Leading Dash Win Driver award on a Spring-like closing day, April 14 at Dover Downs.
Tim Tetrick turned Powerful Mist loose on the final turn and the son of Powerful Toy-Misty Speed rolled into the lead and victory in a :26.2 final panel to win the $100,000 DSBF Three-Year-Old colt final. Three Martini’s, driven by Montrell Teague, was next with Dyslexic and Ross Wolfenden the show finisher.
Wayne Givens picked Powerful Mist out of the Winbak Farm Yearling consignment in 2009 for $27,000 for patrons Niel Gargiulo, Louie Paglierani and Legacy Racing of DE Inc. At two he won nine times in 16 races including the Woodrow Wilson winning $212,537. He impressed Tim Tetrick so much that he told trainer Wayne Givens he would be glad to race him at three. So far he’s three-or-three adding $70,000 to his 2011 bankroll.
Mob Boss proved to be the best in the $100,000 trot. Bret Brittingham drove the Don Boss Vita-Hornby Belle gelding from post 8 and fought off a valiant bid from race favorite First Captain handled by Ross Wolfenden through the mid portion of a 1:59 mile then held off a bid from Smart Strike with Art Stafford Jr. in the stretch to win for the third time in four career starts. Anastasias Papdopoulos conditions the Don Boss Vitra-Hornby Belle gelding. Larry and Barbara Mayer, retired teachers, bought Mob Boss last year and he developed this season becoming a good looking trotter. He has now won $68,470 in purses.
In $20,000 DSBF consolations, Linda MacDonald-conditioned All Shoes On Deck reined by Eddie Davis Jr., a son of Crown Prince Gar-Spring Into Speed, won a trot in 201.1 for Meadow Creek Stables. Boston Beam R (Corey Callahan) was second with favorite Big Award (Jim Morand) third.
Kirklands Hanover got up in 1:54.4 to win the DSBF pace prelim with George Dennis driving for Dave Clark and trainer Jeff Clark. Mattador D (Vic Kirby) was runner-up. Bad Man Sam (Corey Callahan) finished third.
Roger Plante closed out the action for the meet with is second win on the program driving Rich Malone and trainer Darrell Dashiell Jr.’s Power Of Ten to a 1:56.4 win at 84-1 odds.
In ceremonies between races, Cams Art, a home-bred owned by McInnis and trained by their son Ryan was voted by members of the U.S. Harness Writers Association Delaware Valley chapter, Horse of the Meet. Cams Art, won 12 of 14 starts and more than $125,000 in purses, all at Dover Downs.
For the seventh consecutive meet, Josh Green won the Leading Trainer of the meet honors. Corey Callahan drove three winners to overtake Ron Pierce and win Leading Dash Win title by one win, 229-228.
Again this meet, a large contingent of ladies of the Red Hat Society made their annual visit to Dover Downs.
Dover Downs thanks its many fans, local and throughout North America during its 42nd meet. The 2011-2012 meet will open as usual in late Fall.
