Harrington, DE --- Two $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund finals for 2-year-old trotters were contested on the penultimate 2013 program at Harrington Raceway on Wednesday (Oct. 23).
Owner/trainer Syl King, Jr.’s Whichwayrightrleft ($10.80, Ross Wolfenden) took the final for colts and geldings with a career best 2:01 triumph. The Crown Prince Gar gelding sat behind pacesetter LG’s Pride and surged by in deep stretch for a one length win. It was his fifth win in nine career starts. Bosston Bnz finished third.
In the final for trotting fillies, Richard Lombardo, JJ&M Stable and Pam Wagner’s Kelsey’s Commando ($2.60, Victor Kirby) prevailed in 2:04.3 for trainer Gary Green. The CR Commando-sired filly was sent immediately for the lead and never relented in her win over Overnight Hit and Way Over Paid. It was the second career win for Kelsey's Commando and a new lifetime best.
Meanwhile, with one night of live racing remaining in the Harrington meet, there is a three-way race for the driving title.
Harrington three-time defending driving champion Ross Wolfenden (143 wins) currently has a narrow one win lead over Allan Davis (142) and George Dennis (142). Both Wolfenden and Davis won four races on the Wednesday program.
Trainer Joe Hundertpfund was presented with his award as leading trainer, with 50 wins at the meet. It was his first ever training title.
“It’s not about me, it’s about we,” said a humble Hundertpfund in the winner’s circle. “I have a lot of great help on our team and that makes all the difference.”
The overnight feature on the card was the $19,000 Open Trot which saw Danbry Racing and Rosemary Smutz’s Blueridge Tornado (Davis, $12.60) prevail in 1:56.4 over Can Do and Green Day.
Victor Kirby and Jon Roberts each had a driving double.
