Temple Hills, MD --- On Tuesday (Feb. 23) the Maryland Horse Industry met in the state capitol of Annapolis to lobby legislators on the importance of the horse industry in Maryland.

The day started with Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford presenting a proclamation from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan that Feb. 23 would be Maryland Horse Industry Day, stating, “The Maryland Horse Industry employs nearly 28,000 Marylanders, accounts for $512 million in sales annually, $72 million in taxes collected and includes 587,000 acres of our beautiful State…Maryland is pleased to commend the Maryland Equine Industry for its contributions to the economic health of our great State.”

The Maryland Standardbred community were proud sponsors of the day. Representatives from Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners’ Association, Maryland Standardbred Breeders Association and Rosecroft Raceway were in attendance. Ocean Downs was also a sponsor of the event.

The industry partners announced that a study has been commissioned for an economic impact study on the industry’s fiscal contributions to the state. It has been more than 10 years since the last one had been conducted.

More than 25 legislators meetings were set up following the press conference where horse industry partners were able to speak with their representatives in the state legislature about the importance of the horse industry's economic impact on Maryland.

Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners’ Association president Thomas Cooke stated, “Every aspect of the industry has their own legislative priorities and we are much stronger when we show our unity in Annapolis.”

The day ended with a reception that was well attended by legislators including State Senate President Thomas Mike Miller and five cabinet secretaries of the Hogan administration.
