Lothian, MD --- Friends of Maryland Standardbreds will host its second annual Racing Under Saddle seminar next month at Winbak Farm.

On May 15, Friends of Maryland Standardbreds invites anyone interested to a Racing Under Saddle demonstration at Winbak Farm in Chesapeake City, Md. The event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes lunch, will feature speakers Maria Buchanan and Stephanie Jacobs. The cost to attend is $10.

The seminar, which was held for the first time last year, offers anyone interested in RUS the chance to learn about the increasingly popular sport. Buchanan and Jacobs, both successful RUS riders, will discuss techniques and training methods and answer questions.

Buchanan, who won the RUS exhibition race at Ocean Downs last year, has been a RUS competitor for close to five years.

“My first successful mount was Celebrity Playboy for Ron Burke,” she said. “We won three out of five races that first year and I was hooked. I believe it is a great way for women and others in the equestrian world to become involved in racing.”

Jacobs’ first experience with RUS came when she saw the under saddle event on Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands in 2013. She credits Helene Gregory and Julie Miller with helping her get involved.

“This sport allows women to compete equally in the racing industry and to promote equestrian interest in this breed as well as the sport,” she said.

Clarissa Coughlin, creator of FOMS, encourages anyone interested to attend the seminar. Attendees who plan to compete in RUS events are welcome to bring the Standardbred they intend to use with them to the event.

"The scenery at Winbak alone is worth the drive," Coughlin said of the extensive Standardbred facility. "Come out and join in the fun."
