The trip was sweet for Muscle Hustle in Monday’s $32,200 Tie Silk Series final at Mohawk Racetrack, but the end result was even sweeter for the three-year-old colt.

 

With Randy Waples at the lines, Muscle Hustle tucked into the garden spot behind race favourite Donicus, who was shooting for a sweep of the series. Donicus sped through fractions of :27.2, :58.2 and 1:28.2, but he couldn’t fend off Muscle Hustle in crunch time. Muscle Hustle kicked home in :27.4 to win by a pair of lengths over Donicus in 1:56.2. Merchandiser rounded out the Triactor ticket.

 

Per Henriksen trains the son of Muscle Mass-Crown Laurel for Ecurie Bergh Inc of Norwood, Ont. After going 1-for-3 as a rookie, the lightly-raced sophomore now owns a 2-for-2 record this season. He pushed his lifetime earnings to $33,260 with the win.

 

Charlie Is A Joker pulled off a 9-1 upset in this week’s edition of the $34,000 Preferred Trot, and he did so with a little help from a group of bad actors. Race favourite Flanagan Memory and last week’s Preferred winner Fearless Man made breaks in the early stages of the mile, and that changed the whole landscape of the race.

 

Charlie Is A Joker shot to the top and sliced out and opening quarter in :28 before overtaken by Zeus Lightning. That speedster rolled the field through middle fractions of :57.3 and 1:28.1, but Charlie Is A Joker popped out late and used his :27.1 closing speed to win by a length over Zeus Lightning in 1:55.3. Third prize went to Hldontghttoyurdrms.

 

Ben Baillargeon trains the eight-year-old son of Angus Hall-Keystone Caprice for Tom and Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catherines, Ont. Their homebred improved this year’s record to 4-2-1 from 13 starts with the win. The 32-time time winner has banked more than $443,000 to date.

 

Stakes star Muscle Baby Doll was triumphant in her four-year-old debut thanks to her 10-1 upset score in the $24,000 Fillies & Mares Trot. Away fourth in the early stages of the mile, the daughter of Muscle Mass-Have You Ever tipped first over around the final turn and then used a :27.1 closing quarter to win by 1-1/4 lengths over race favourite Charmed Life in 1:54.4. Third prize was earned by Rockin With Dewey.Sylvain Filion mapped out the winning trip for the Tony O’Sullivan trainee, who is owned by F Bellino And Sons LLC of Bronxville, NY. The 13-time winner upped her cash stash to $463,617 with the win.
