Yankee Cruiser colt leads Meadows qualifiers

Washington, PA --- Eighteen groups of freshmen qualified at The Meadows on Wednesday morning (June 15) and the day’s first event proved to be the fastest.

Sweet Lou, a Yankee Cruiser colt out of the Falcons Future mare Sweet Future, covered his mile in 1:55.1. The youngster, trained by Ron Burke and driven by Dave Palone, cut fractions of :28.4, :59 and 1:27.3 en route to an 18 length victory.

Sweet Lou, owned by Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Lawrence Karr and Phillip Collura, was a $38,000 yearling purchase last fall at Harrisburg.

Another Burke Stable entrant, Babe’s I Scoot (I Scoot Hanover), followed his 1:57.4 qualifier last week with a 1:56 effort on Wednesday. Palone was again in the bike as the colt cruised to a 5-1/4 length victory, with a :56.1 last half.

The fastest pacing filly on the day was Native Angel (Allamerican Native-Sistine Chapel), trained and driven by Doug Snyder. Owned by Doug and Jan Snyder, Native Angel was making her first appearance on the track, and took a first-over route to a 1:57.1 win.

The day’s speediest trotting event was won by Upfront Bye Bye, trained and driven by Bill Zendt. The Cantab Hall filly, owned by Ed Mullinax, went wire-to-wire in 2:02.4. Originally named Birdie Hanover, the filly sold at Harrisburg for $13,000.

The top colt trotter of the session was Rock N Jessie, a Jailhouse Jesse colt, also out of the Burke Stable with Palone driving. Rock N Jessie won in 2:03.1.
