Streaking Fillies Score In Stanfield Memorial
Three-year-old pacing fillies Charlottes Maggie, Honey Do Jigtime and Grayland Rain continued their win streaks in three $18,850 Frank And Beth Stanfield Memorial divisions on Sunday afternoon at Truro Raceway.
With Shane Bernard in the sulky, the nearly perfect Charlottes Maggie converted from the pocket to win the first division in a career-best 1:58.4. The daughter of Royal Mattjesty-Midnight Beach wore down pacesetter Our Lady Byng (Kenny Arsenault) to prevail for the fourth consecutive time by three-quarters of a length while favourite Bemused (Marc Campbell) journeyed first over to finish third.
Tom Weatherbie trains the brown filly, who is six-for-seven in her debut season. She has banked $11,507 for owner Shaun MacIsaac of Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Multiple stakes winner Honey Do Jigtime added another victory to her resume when she advanced to the lead from fourth and opened up daylight on the field in the second division. The daughter of Coastocoast Yankee-Gold Luck and trainer-driver Clare MacDonald won for the third straight time by over nine lengths in 1:58 with Moon Landing (Danny Romo) and Woodmere Grinny (Kenny Arsenault) finishing second and third.
The bay filly has won seven races in nine starts this year including a division of the Rudy Chappell Memorial Stakes, the Maritime Breeders, and three Atlantic Sires Stakes events for owners Morah Kerr of Greenfield, N.S. and Phonsie MacEachern of Port Hood, N.S. With 11 wins and five seconds in 19 career starts, Honey Do Jigtime has collected more than $60,000 in lifetime earnings.
The final division went to Grayland Rain, who emerged from the pocket and swept wide around the first over challenger and eventual second place finisher Diamond Coast (Gilles Barrieau). The daughter of Benvolio Hanover-Donnas Four As and trainer-driver Marc Campbell opened up a three and three-quarter length lead in the stretch en route to winning in a career-best 1:57.4. Favourite Forthena (Clare MacDonald) finished third.
Paul Gray of Pugwash, N.S. owns the bay filly, who entered the Sunday stake off two Atlantic Sires Stakes wins. She is now three-for-10 this year and has won four times in her career to earn $16,872.
Sunday's $1,225 Winners Over Pace was won by the Cyril MacDonald-trained Rumble Cheeks and driver Todd Trites in 1:58.1. The victory was the six-year-old gelding's second in a row and a new season's best.
