The Ontario Sires Stakes has released the 2020 OSS schedule and it is now available for viewing online.

Ontario’s talented three-year-old pacing colts will kick off the 2020 Ontario Sires Stakes schedule on Sunday, May 17 at Flamboro Downs, competing in the first of five Grassroots Legs on their calendar.

The sophomore pacing colts will be featured on the Confederation Cup Final program, one of five signature stakes events that will highlight Ontario Sires Stakes competitors in 2020. The Raceway at Western Fair District’s Camluck Classic program, Clinton Raceway’s Kin Pace Final, Grand River Raceway’s Industry Day and Woodbine Mohawk Park’s Metro Pace Final will also feature legs of the provincial program.

Worth almost $15 million in 2020, the Ontario Sires Stakes season will wrap up at Woodbine Mohawk Park in October. After battling for points through the regular season the top Grassroots competitors will square off in their $20,000 Semi-Finals on Thursday, Sept. 24 (two-year-olds) and Friday, Sept. 25 (three-year-olds). The top five finishers from each semi-final will return to Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, Oct. 3 for their $75,000 Grassroots Championship showdown. Two weeks later the top Gold Series point earners will settle divisional honours in the Oct. 17 Super Finals, with each Super Final boasting a purse of $250,000.

“We’ve got three Ontario Sires Stakes colts and then those same owners that own Alicorn, they bought two Bettors Delight fillies as well, so if they all make it, it could be a good summer,” said Chantal Mitchell, who trained pacing filly Alicorn to a freshman Super Final title in 2019. “I highly doubt there will be another Alicorn in that group, because they don’t come around all that often, but it would be nice if something would come close to her.”

In addition to the Grassroots and Gold Series’, Ontario Sired horses have the opportunity to compete in the Prospect Series in 2020. Also offering five regular season events culminating in a final, the Prospect Series will debut on Saturday, May 16 at Hiawatha Horse Park with the first event for the three-year-old pacing colts. Grand River Raceway will host the eight Prospect Series Finals, worth $15,000 each, on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
