an Dave Carey made his 3,000th driving win a memorable one as he pulled off a 32-1 upset aboard six-year-old pacing mare Scotian Lass in the eighth race at Truro Raceway on Sunday afternoon.

 

Carey worked out a perfect pocket trip aboard Scotian Lass and prevailed up the passing lane by a quarter-length in a four-across finish over favourite Mean Pauline, Arizona Bucks and pacesetter Barona Lilac. The time of the mile was 1:59.4.

 

In addition to driving 3,000 winners and earning over $2.5 million in purses throughout his career, the 64-year-old resident of Upper Onslow, Nova Scotia has trained winners of 426 races with his stable earning close to a half-million dollars.

 

Sunday proved to be a day of milestones as Rhea Chase, 29, celebrated her first training win earlier in the fourth race. Her 11-year-old pacing gelding Secret Fantasy fought off Joachim past the half and went on to win in 2:03 with Ryan Ellis in the sulky. Chase's first win came in just her fifth training start.

 

Bobs Ideal and trainer/driver Darren Crowe won the afternoon's $1,375 top class, going wire-to-wire in 2:00.2. Doug Polley trainees Brookdale Buster and Brookdale Shadow rounded out the top three finishers. The 12-1 longshot winner is a four-year-old son of Western Ideal owned by Robert Siteman of Valley, N.S.
