Racing Roundup: Sand Savage scores in Tioga feature

Monday's (August 15) edition of Racing Roundup features results stories from Tioga Downs, Harrington Raceway and Ocean Downs.

Sand Savage scores in Tioga feature

Nichols, NY --- Sand Savage came into Tioga Downs’ featured $11,000 conditioned pace on Monday evening after four straight starts without earning a check.

That slump ended as Greg Merton put Sand Savage on the front end and cut fractions of :27.2 and :56.1. At the three-quarter pole in 1:23.4, Sand Savage was well in command as Red Star Paylater (Ed Hensley), who was sitting in the pocket, made a break and scattered the field behind him. That paved the way for Sand Savage to have a walk across the finish line in 1:53.2. Sisyphus (Phil Fluet) avoided the breaking horses to finish second, while Stormin Rustler (Corey Braden) was fanned out wide, but finished third.

Scott Blackler trains the 4-year-old son of Allamerican Native–Sheer Hose for Beverly Paganelli, Lightning 5 Racing, Michael Daddario and John MacLean. The win was the seventh of the year for Sand Savage, who with the victory increased his seasonal bankroll to more than $67,000.

Phil Fluet posted a driving grand slam on the evening’s 13-race card, while Lewayne Miller, Jimmy Marohn, Jr. and Greg Merton each recorded doubles.

Harrington Raceway
Brian Callahan’s I Wanna Go Fast ($4.20, Corey Callahan) parlayed a perfect trip to a 1:54.2 victory in the featured $18,600 Open Pace on Monday at Harrington Raceway. The lightly raced 4-year-old Three Olives gelding sat behind pacesetter Harlingen Hanover most of the way and charged down the passing lane in the stretch to win by two lengths over Village Blast and Harlingen Hanover. Trained by his owner, I Wanna Go Fast has won 14 of 31 career starts. Drivers Corey Callahan and Allan Davis each had two wins.

Ocean Downs
In the seventh race on Monday night at Ocean Downs, Mark Gray drove Sometimes Regrets to a first place finish in 1:56.4. Sometimes Regrets (Spirited Style–Pelikn) is a 4-year-old gelding trained by Gray and owned by Scott Collier and Ryan Gray. John Wagner drove Uncommon Hanover to a 2:00.2 score with a $28.80 win amount in the eighth race. Uncommon Hanover (Real Desire–Undaunted Angel) is a 5-year-old gelding trained by Cindy Englebach who co-owns with Jason Alan Bowers. Bryan Truitt drove Major Wonder to secure first place in the ninth race in 2:01.3. Major Wonder is trained by Truitt and owned by Neil Falter.
