Berlin, MD --- Ocean Downs hosted the 2-year-old Maryland Standardbred Fund races on Wednesday night (August 8).
In the first division for colt and gelding trotters, a non-wagering event, Cashmere Briefs (Political Briefing-Cashmere Sahbra) left from post three to control the mile. Jonathan Roberts pulled Pure Glory at the five-eighths-mile marker and just when it looked like he was going to catch Cashmere Briefs at the wire Pure Glory made an unfortunate break. Cashmere Briefs stopped the clock in 2:05.3 for Nanticoke Racing, Delbert and Michael Cain and trainer/driver Les Givens.
De Nada (Donato Hanover-Duolotta) was able to hold off a charge down the stretch by Solo Command and Juanna Be The Man to take the second division for colt and gelding trotters in 2:03.3. De Nada is owned by trainer/driver John Wagner, Terry Kibler and Scott Woogen.
Brian Emerson’s Bonnie Ben Jamin (Cam's Rocket-Jamin J) remained undefeated in stakes action at Ocean Downs by winning the first division of the filly pace. Reinsman Jim Morand let Girlfriend Bash go to the top near the quarter and immediately retook the lead before stopping the timer in 1:58.2. Judy Welty is the trainer.
Almost every horse in the second division of the filly pace took a shot at K J’s Caroline (Roddy's Bags Again-Dilligaff), as they were stacked three deep at the half and all trying for a piece of her until the wire, but K J’s Caroline never lost control, crossing the wire in 1:57.3. John Wagner trains and drives for owner Scott Woogen.
Roger Plante, Jr. drove Chesapeake Bay (Artiscape-Prymetyme Scootie) to a win in the colt and gelding pace, setting a new stakes record of 1:55.2, with Real Impulsive finishing second. Chesapeake Bay is owned by Forrest Bartlett.
In the ninth race, just as in the five earlier Maryland Standardbred Fund races, the horse that cut the mile came back to the winner’s circle. Kristen Y (Malabar Man-Ms Kristin) won the filly trot in 2:01.4 with Vic Kirby in the sulky, giving trainer John Wagner and owner Scott Woogen their third stakes win of the night.
Maryland Standardbred Fund action continues Thursday at Ocean Downs as the 3-year-olds compete, including world record holder Googoo Gaagaa and undefeated Windshield doing battle in race six.
